Former National Football League Player Antonio Brown Files Not Guilty Response in Attempted Murder Case
One-time National Football League star Antonio Brown is heading to Miami to address an attempted murder allegation connected with a shooting that took place in May, with his attorney filing a not guilty response on his behalf.
Correctional documents in Essex County, New Jersey, show that Brown was freed on Tuesday morning for his move to Florida. Brown, one of the most popular athletes in the National Football League, had forgone transfer to Florida from New Jersey, in which he was detained after being arrested in the city of Dubai.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, said in an communication that he has already submitted a written not guilty response to the murder attempt allegation. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as soon as Wednesday morning for a bond hearing, Eiglarsh added.
Based on his detention order, Brown is charged of taking a handgun from a protection guard after a public figure match event in May and firing two rounds at a man he had confronted with earlier. The alleged victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, informed authorities that one of the bullets grazed his throat.
Eiglarsh asserted that Brown was merely protecting himself from Nantambu.
“The actions he was compelled to take were purely in self-defense against the claimed person’s hostile behavior. Brown was targeted that evening and responded within his legal right to protect himself,” Eiglarsh commented.
Brown was not right away detained because originally officers did not recognize Nantambu as a target. It only subsequently in May that Nantambu delivered a full statement about the incident to officers and named Brown as the shooter, the affidavit says.
From his digital content, Brown had been staying in the city of Dubai for a number of months. In a message after the confrontation, Brown stated he was defending himself because he was “jumped by several people who sought to steal my possessions and inflict physical damage to me.”
A category two murder attempt charge in the state of Florida imposes a highest fifteen-year incarceration penalty and up to a $10,000 penalty in the case of a conviction.
Brown has encountered numerous legal problems over the period. He earlier had been charged of battery of a delivery employee, various domestic violence accusations, neglect to pay parental support and further incidents.
In a 2021 season game with the Buccaneers against the Jets, Brown stripped off his uniform, equipment and gloves and ran off the stadium, resulting in his termination by the Buccaneers and effectively halting his professional journey.
