Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World

The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the first new weapon added to the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it might just change how you play Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates focused on riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we aimed for a new weapon that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your allies on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and inflict greater injury [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and going out and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.

In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no necessity to surface for oxygen.

The other inclusions are largely things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this issue periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also bring in something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also adds that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while riding a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the best defense it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
