Severe Weather System Claudia's Impact: Clean-up Operations Continue as Arctic Blast Looms

First responders are continuing their efforts to address extensive inundation caused by the passing storm.

A significant emergency was declared in the town of Monmouth, south-east Wales, where individuals were safely removed from waterlogged properties after heavy downpours on Friday.

On Sunday morning, four severe flood warnings, warning of life-threatening conditions, were still in effect, alongside 41 flood warnings in England. River levels on the Monnow exceeded all-time highs, topping levels recorded during previous severe weather events.

Homes, businesses, transportation systems, and power grids all experienced damage from significant flooding in Welsh regions, authorities confirmed.

Reports indicated that around 20 properties in England were flooded due to the severe conditions, such as properties in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia withdraws, a cold snap is forecast to sweep across the UK, bringing sub-zero conditions and potential wintry precipitation.

Saturday night, the country experienced its chilliest evening since spring, with mercury readings dropping to minus seven degrees Celsius in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A decline of around 5C will shift unseasonably warm November readings to single digits nationwide, with Sunday's high reaching around 11 degrees in south-east England before becoming colder at the week's beginning.

"While the storm retreats, high pressure to the northwest will drive a chilly Arctic air across the UK," a meteorologist stated. "This results in much colder conditions than lately, and, while generally drier, there is also a risk of snow and ice. Frost across many areas are anticipated, with readings falling as low as minus seven in some places next week, and daily maximums staying in single figures."

He added, "Combine this with a chilly northern breeze, and there will be a significant wind chill. This represents a notable change after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures."

Health authorities have issued a cold weather alert for several English regions from Monday, while flood management bodies have warned that flooding may continue throughout the coming days.

The cold weather alert is in place from Monday morning until 8am next Friday, including the eastern Midlands, western Midlands, northeast, northwest, and Yorkshire region.
