Teenager Discovered Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased just days after being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Police Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest received testimony from school personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she called Kai's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The court heard his parents said they never receive that message.
Official Finding
Lead investigator informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.
Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was released whilst investigations continued."
The official concluded: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
